As plastic pollution remains a critical global challenge, the development of sustainable alternatives to replace conventional amber PET bottles—a long-standing hurdle for the domestic liquor industry—is gaining significant momentum. Dongwon Systems announced that it has initiated the development of a large-capacity Oneway glass beer bottle, benchmarking advanced western packaging markets to actively drive carbon reduction and circular resource loops.
Traditionally, large-capacity beer products in South Korea have relied heavily on amber PET bottles, which are notorious for hindering recycling processes. To block UV rays and prevent carbonation loss, these bottles utilize a multi-layer structure embedded with nylon. However, because nylon possesses a high melting point (approx. 400°C) compared to standard PET (260°C), it causes severe operational defects such as nozzle clogging during recycling. Furthermore, due to low economic sorting yields, amber PET often suffers from reverse margins, rendering it waste rather than a recyclable asset.
■ Benchmarking Global Standards: The Transition to Large-Capacity Glass
To resolve these systemic environmental bottlenecks, Dongwon Systems turned its attention to global markets where large-capacity glass beer packaging is already a proven standard. In the United States, major breweries like Budweiser, Miller, and Coors widely distribute large-capacity glass formats. Similarly, in European markets such as Portugal and Spain, large-size glass containers are staple items across retail sectors.
By comprehensively analyzing various global product samples, Dongwon Systems strategically benchmarked ‘Super Bock,’ the top-selling beer brand in Portugal, to design an eco-friendly glass bottle that perfectly balances structural durability with premium usability.
■ Technical Specifications: Precision Engineering and Strategic Light-Weighting
The newly engineered 1L large-capacity glass bottle will initially launch in an Amber coloration to ensure optimal UV protection, with potential expansion into Flint (transparent) variants. To prevent breakage during domestic logistics, the initial target weight is set at 480g, with plans for phased, high-tech light-weighting optimization. Compared to legacy returnable bottles weighing up to 640g, this innovative Oneway model can achieve a weight reduction of up to 60%, drastically slashing transportation carbon footprints.
To maximize compatibility, the bottle finish is engineered in two configurations—ROPP and Crown caps—catering to global distribution trends and providing enhanced filling line flexibility for domestic beverage manufacturers. “This large-capacity Oneway glass bottle development represents a critical turning point that will actively overcome the plastic crisis and shift the commercial beverage packaging paradigm toward true sustainability,” stated a representative from Dongwon Systems.
